About this Speaker

Natalie completed a doctorate in clinical psychology, during which she specialised clinically in trauma and focused her academic research on treatments for personality disorder. She has worked in the field of mental health for ten years within NHS, private and third sector services. Natalie’s primary clinical interest has always been working with adults with complex needs. This has included previous posts in a specialist personality disorder service and a specialist post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) service. Natalie also has a keen interest in global mental health and supporting refugees and asylum seekers. With an aim to draw together these clinical interests, Natalie pursued a role within the homelessness sector (Psychologically Informed Environment), supporting socially excluded individuals with significant mental health and substance misuse needs.

Natalie draws upon a variety of psychological models, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioural (CBT) and compassion-focused therapy principles. Within these models, her formulations often draw upon neurobiological theory and attachment theory to support clients to understand and normalise experiences that can feel frightening and abnormal. In addition to direct clinical work, Natalie has experience of supervising colleagues, developing and delivering training, and organizing academic events. Natalie is passionate about relieving emotional and psychological distress by working throughout multiple levels of society: working therapeutically with individual clients, training and upskilling teams and services to most effectively support clients, contributing to structural change on a systemic level (e.g. public policy), and continuing to contribute to the research base that underpins our understanding of effective interventions.
